Pairings - Score and More

Pairings of Member Artists’ Work From Today and Long Ago

Skylight Gallery

September 1 – 25, 2026

Deadline is July 6th. 11 weeks left to enter.

About the Exhibition

For this Exhibition, members will enter a pair of their own works, one current and one from 20 or more years prior. (Younger members can choose the longest periods that make sense - from their earliest ‘serious’ art making to today.) Choose works that show something meaningful to you about the way your work has developed between then and now.

Our goal is to encourage our members to look, as a curator or art critic might, at their own artistic evolution or journey and find some narrative thread that can be understood in your selected works. We will attempt to select entry pairs on this basis, not as a simple “quality of concept and execution” of the works themselves, though this will also be a factor, but more as a pairing that shows self-awareness of our extended journeys as artists.

As a final part of this pair you are asked to create for display up to a page of text (up to 350 words) discussing anything you like about the works and their connection, evolution, feelings or other reflections which can help you and viewers understand the longer arc of your artistic development. It can be anything from a short catalog-like essay to quotes or a poem. Some amount of text is required for a complete entry, but will not be judged as part of your entry. Salmagundi will print your text on a single sheet for display but text longer than 350 words will be cut or text size shrunk at the discretion of the curators. Please write your name at the bottom of your text.

Works in all mediums including painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture are eligible for entry. This exhibition is open to all Salmagundi Artist Members. Some number of larger works, either one or both parts of the pair, can be entered and included as outlined in Exhibition Requirements below.
