Salmagundi Club

2027 Spring Benefit Auctions

Skylight Gallery

March 9 – April 1, 2027

Deadline is January 18th. 10 weeks left to enter.

About the Auction

Twice yearly Salmagundi artist members get together and donate works for sale by auction to benefit our club. These auctions have always been a major source of funding and a plaque over the fireplace in the Wiggins bar calls testament to the funds raised at a similar auction for funds to purchase our clubhouse in 1917. This time is no different and it’s a chance for all of us to exhibit our work, find an admirer, and raise money all at the same time. You must be a member to participate in the auction. The entries will be juried as always by the art committee for quality and how marketable we think the work is.

Exhibition Requirements

  • Salmagundi Members Only
  • All mediums accepted.
  • Artists may submit 2 works for consideration.
  • Only work not previously offered at Salmagundi auctions will be accepted.
  • Artists are responsible for submitting images with accurate representation of their work. All submitted images are assumed to be images of the completed piece.
  • Outside dimensions of frame may not exceed 28” in any direction.
  • Sculptures should be no more than 28” high and no more than 40 lbs.
  • All works must be professionally framed with wire for hanging. If framing is not applicable to your work, it needs to be professionally presentable for exhibiting in a gallery space with appropriate mounting to hang or display.
  • If displaying the artwork under glass, it’s recommended that artists use plexi-glass to avoid breakage. The Salmagundi Club is not responsible for broken glass damage.
  • Accepted work will remain in place during the exhibition and cannot be removed until it ends.
For additional criteria, please download the prospectus.

Marketing and Sales

Artists are urged to contribute what exemplifies their best work which will also sell in the auction environment. Smaller works, which are usually less expensive, sell better than larger works. Portraits do not sell well.

We encourage all artists to notify collectors of the presence of their work in the Auctions. Successful strategies have included Instagram posting, mailings to customers with an image(s) of the Auction work(s). Emails informing clients and collectors of the upcoming Auctions with images, dates and personal notes about the Auctions have proved successful in the past.

Pricing and Bidding

  • In ShowSubmit, the price you set on your art must be your market (full value) price. At the auction and on the LiveAuctioneer website the opening bid on your work will be listed starting at ⅓ of that price.
  • It is imperative that each artist set a reasonable market price for his or her work, as these auctions are fundraisers for the Club. 50% of the selling price goes to the Club, and 50% goes to the artist.
  • There will be no protective reserves other than the opening bid established as 1/3rd of the artists’ market price.
  • Artists will be notified by Salmagundi’s administrative staff when a sale is made.
When submitting work, artists must answer the following consent questions:
  1. Do you consent to allow the auctioneer to sell your art below the opening bid with discretion? Artists will still receive credit for 50% of the agreed upon opening bid if this occurs.
  2. Artists have the option of donating all proceeds from the sale of their work to support Salmagundi. Otherwise, only 50% of the proceeds will be donated to Salmagundi.

Submissions

  • Framed images are not required for submission. If accepted, the option to submit extra shots of your work will be available via a separate form that's included in the acceptance email.
  • Artists are able to edit their own entries during the entirety of the submission period through ShowSubmit. After the submission deadline, changes to your submission entry will not be accepted.
  • Submissions not adhering to the Exhibition Requirements will be omitted. The decision of the Art Committee as to placement and installation is final.
  • Acceptance / Rejection emails will be coming from ShowSubmit. If you do not receive yours by the acceptance notification date, please login and check your ShowSubmit account notifications.

Accepted Works

  • Acceptance / Rejection emails will be coming from ShowSubmit. If you do not receive yours by the acceptance notification date, please login and check your ShowSubmit account notifications.
  • The artist has the option of delivering accepted works in-person at the Club during our receiving days or shipping the works to the clubhouse.
  • If shipping the work to the clubhouse, to accommodate the possibility of shipping delays, the artist should ship with an expected arrival date of the noted receiving dates above.
  • Works being shipped must be sent in reusable shipping boxes for art. Salmagundi members receive 10% off Air Float boxes. Contact [email protected] for the member’s discount code.
  • The artist must include a prepaid return shipping label from a shipping provider (USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc.) when shipping their work to the club. This is required to ship the artwork back to the artist after the exhibition ends.

Deinstallation

Works must be removed immediately after the exhibition. If artists did not provide a return shipping label, the work will be returned only at the artist’s request and expense. 30 days after the end of an exhibition, each uncollected work will incur a $50 monthly fee which shall be billed to the artist, while the work stays at the Club. Uncollected works after 180 days will legally be considered abandoned property.

Liability

The Salmagundi Club is not responsible for loss, fire, burglary, or any other damage to artwork submitted. Submitting or sending a work of art implies an agreement on the part of the artist with the conditions set forth above. Images of accepted artwork may be used by the Club for publicity, advertising, or other purposes.
