Salmagundi Club

Echoes

Our Collection as Inspiration

In the Hartley, Bridge & Moran Galleries

January 12 – February 5, 2027

Deadline is November 23rd. 17 weeks left to enter.

About the Exhibition

One of the signature enjoyments of being at the Salmagundi Club is being inspired by our past members and their art. For this exhibition, Member Artists will find some work in our collection, from the Library, on the walls or in our Archives, which inspires you and acts as a seed for a new work you create. Selected artists will have both works shown side by side - the old work and your new one.

Here is how it will work:

In your Entry form, you will send photos of both the historical work and your own new piece. Selected artists will have both works shown side by side- with up to a page of text with anything you’d like to say to help viewers understand what inspired you and how you think about the works.

We have worked to get this prospectus out to members early to give you more time to conceive and create your new work.

Accessing the Collection for your Inspiration

Many will have seen a favorite work on the walls of the Club already or remember a piece you can describe but if you’d like to dig even deeper into our collection, our Curator, John Scott and librarian, Jay Barksdale, can support you.

Library:
you can visit our Library any time and browse, carefully, the books and folios there. The library was often used by artists seeking inspiration, including illustrators in the Club seeking source material for commissions they were creating for publications.

Collection:
The work in our Permanent Collection is created essentially all by Salmagundi Club artists. A dedicated workstation has been set up for us in the northeast corner of the Library and is loaded with the database of our collection. Detailed instructions are on the laminated sheet attached to the computer which will show you how to search for paintings by medium, subject, artist or other keywords and attributes. Thumbnail images are in that database as well. Once you have a handful of works you would like to see “in the flesh” arrange an appointment with Salmagundi Curator John Scott, sending him your list in advance (each work has a unique catalog number that will allow him to find it in the racks or elsewhere in the building.). You will be free to make your own reference photographs of the works at that time.

Final notes for the Entry Process and actual Exhibition
:
In all cases, include an image of your primary inspiration piece from the collection in your application. Your accepted work will be exhibited alongside the work that inspired it, wherever possible. Digital printouts of the work from the collection will be used if display is not practical. Original Library folios, if used by accepted artists, can be exhibited nearby in our new display case in the Bridge Gallery area outside the Library.
