Exhibition Overview

The Anderson Museum of Art (AMOA) invites artists to participate in the 14th annual Figures of speech juried exhibition. This unique competition challenges artists to interpret and visualize common figures of speech—those vivid, often poetic expressions embedded in language that convey something more than their literal meanings. Artists are encouraged to creatively translate idioms, metaphors, similes, hyperboles, euphemisms, and more into compelling visual artworks.

Whether humorous, ironic, peculiar, or profound, submissions should breathe life into the abstract language we use every day. Past entries have depicted phrases such as “Three peas in a pod,” “The world is a stage,” and “Birds of a feather flock together.”

Exhibition Juror

Susan Yanos is the author of The Tongue Has No Bone, a book of poems, and Woman, You Are Free: A Spirituality for Women in Luke; and is co-editor and co-author of Emerging from the Vineyard: Essays by Lay Ecclesial Ministers. Her poems, essays and articles have appeared in several journals.

A former professor of writing, literature, and ministry of writing, she wore out several cars earning four degrees—in biology, English literature, and pastoral theology. She has also worked as a freelance editor and teaches community writing workshops.

Since 2018, she has been creating and exhibiting intricately pieced art quilts, winning awards in local, regional, and national art shows. She studied at the Sievers School of Fiber Art and with Jane Dunnewold, an internationally known textile artist. She curated a quilt show for the Art Association of Henry County (IN) entitled Quilters Then and Now: Piecing Women’s Stories, and a fiber art exhibit entitled Explorations in Fiber which featured the work of over 20 fiber artists from east central Indiana. In 2023-24, she won an On-Ramp Fellowship from the Indiana Arts Commission.

Born in New Castle, IN, she is a life-long resident of the state. She lives with her husband on their farm in east-central Indiana where she enjoys tending her garden and fruit trees.
