An Invitation to Exhibit

Ballard’s Fine Art Gallery invites artists to apply through ShowSubmit for three juried artist places in The Legendary West: In Bloom. Selected artists will exhibit alongside Our Invited Artists in a show that brings together the spirit of the West and the beauty of flowers.

Why Florals Matter to Me

My love of floral paintings began with Mrs. West, a Greek woman who helped raise me. Her home was surrounded by peonies and roses. She would cut the flowers and float them in a round crystal rose bowl, and that simple gesture made her home feel welcoming, peaceful, and loved.

Those memories have stayed with me. Floral paintings bring that same feeling into a home, preserving something beautiful long after a blossom has faded. This exhibition is personal to me: “The Legendary West” honors both the American West and Mrs. West, whose flowers helped shape the way I see beauty.

I want artists to bring their own voice to this exhibition. The floral element may be the heart of the work or a thoughtful detail within a landscape, portrait, wildlife scene, or another subject. What matters is that it belongs in the work and reflects the artist’s vision.

Theme and Accepted Media

  • Submitted artwork must be fresh for The Legendary West: In Bloom and must not have been shown previously at any gallery or show. This requirement applies to all submitted paintings, sculptures, and other artwork.
  • Every submitted work must include a floral element. Flowers may be prominent or subtle, but the floral connection must be visible and intentional. Artists may interpret the theme in their own style; the work does not need to be a traditional floral still life.
  • Most fine art media may be submitted, including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, mixed media, and sculpture. The majority of sales at Ballard’s are oil paintings, acrylics, pastel, and bronze sculptures, with some watercolor sales. This offers context about the gallery’s collector base; artists working in other media are welcome to apply.

Frames Matter

  • All paintings and other two-dimensional works must be professionally framed, with no mat, and ready to hang.
  • The frame is part of the collector’s first impression and should complement the artwork and meet the presentation standards of a fine art gallery.
  • Frames must be clean, secure, and in excellent condition, with appropriate hanging hardware.
  • No sawtooth hooks are permitted.
  • Pastel, watercolor, and other works that need glazing must use a professional, conservation-appropriate framing method without a mat.
  • Sculpture must arrive professionally finished and ready for display.

How to Apply

Artists are encouraged to submit three or more works through ShowSubmit so the gallery can review a small body of work. Submitting three is not required: artists may submit up to 10 works. Jury images of two-dimensional artwork must show the artwork unframed. Once selected, artists must submit additional photographs showing each accepted work in its exact exhibition frame. For sculpture, include views showing the complete piece and its presentation.
  • Include artist name and contact information, artwork title, medium, dimensions, framed dimensions where applicable, and retail price.
  • Include a brief artist biography and a short description of the floral connection in the submitted work.

Acceptance Notifications

Submission does not guarantee acceptance. Three artists will be selected; accepted works will be identified in the acceptance notice.

Entry Fee

  • $30 for 1 work. $10 each additional.
  • Up to 10 works.

Shipping

Plan shipping early enough for the fully framed artwork to arrive no later than Friday, May 14, 2027. This is an arrival deadline, not a ship-by date. Allow additional time for weather, carrier delays, and international transit. The delivery address and receiving instructions will be provided to selected artists. Early arrivals are always welcome. Please contact the gallery to arrange for artwork to arrive early.

Artwork must be shipped in an Airfloat box or a similar protective art shipping box. Two-dimensional artwork must be secured in its frame with offset clips before shipping. Do not use bubble wrap. Clearly identify the artwork and include unpacking or handling instructions when needed. A prepaid return shipping label must accompany the artwork for its return if it does not sell. If your carrier cannot issue a return label in advance, you may provide one at a later date when requested by the Gallery.

When a painting sells, the Airfloat box or similar protective art shipping box will be reused to safely ship the artwork to the collector.

Artwork Return

If collectors have shown interest, the gallery may ask to hold a painting or sculpture for the next First Friday show. With the artist’s agreement, work may remain at the gallery for up to three months after the Friday, June 4, 2027 opening, through Saturday, September 4, 2027. Unsold work will then be returned; work without continued collector interest may be returned sooner.

Sales and Commission

All accepted artwork must be original and available for sale. Include the retail price with the submission. Artists will receive 60% of the retail price; the gallery receives 40%. Any gallery-authorized discount comes from the gallery’s share. Selected artists will receive the gallery’s consignment agreement before sending work.

Liability and Insurance

Artists are responsible for insuring their artwork during shipping to and from the gallery. Ballard’s Fine Art Gallery carries $500,000 in liability insurance. Coverage for consigned artwork while at the gallery is subject to the policy’s terms and must be confirmed before shipment.

Images and Publicity

By submitting, artists grant Ballard’s Fine Art Gallery permission to reproduce submitted artwork images for publicity related to The Legendary West: In Bloom, including advertisements, editorial materials, the gallery website, email newsletters, social media, and exhibition materials. Artists retain copyright. The gallery will credit the artist when reproducing an image. No additional reproduction fee will be paid for these promotional uses.

Publicity production dates are opportunities for selected artists, not additional entry deadlines. Earlier image submissions allow more time for publicity consideration. Missing Monday, February 1, 2027 does not eliminate every later advertising opportunity, but placement depends on available space and editorial or advertising selection.
