Juror of Selections
pirkkomakela.fi
Pirkko Mäkelä-Haapalinna lives and works in Finnish Lapland and is a member of the Finnish Painters’ Union and Master Pastelist in PSA. She mainly works with pastels, but also uses mixed media. Mäkelä-Haapalinna’s works are colorful and multilayered. The sources of inspiration are usually the key experiences of identity, dreams and memories. Her works can be approached from the perspective of both abstraction and figurative art, and they are often accompanied by a strong empathy for place. She has had several solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad, and her works have also been awarded in many international competitions. Several public collections, e.g. Wihuri Foundation and City of Rovaniemi, have purchased her works.
Judge of Awards
Terri Ford discovered pastels in 1987, and after 25 years as a graphic designer, devoted full time to the medium in 2000. Her paintings are representational with some more impressionistic and others more realistic. These images have gained her national and international recognition by achieving Master and Eminent status in the most prestigious pastel societies globally. She is a popular workshop instructor across the U.S. and abroad and has juried and judged many exhibitions. But her greatest achievement is the inspiration she captures in her landscapes with their ever changing light and conditions: Terri’s mantra is “deeper, darker, richer.”
