Juror for Selection and Awards
"When I paint, I become a composer myself: I have the power to subtract or to add, to finish or leave unfinished. I am creating an interpretation of my subject, which makes it unique and truly mine."
Luis Alvarez Roure is an award-winning artist working in the fields of still life, portraiture, and figurative paintings. He is best known for his portraits of internationally recognized personalities such as iconic composer Philip Glass, former Chairman of The Federal Reserve Paul Volcker, acclaimed American actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, GRAMMY award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, Metropolitan Opera bass/baritone and Kennedy Center's Honoree Justino Diaz, British cellist Steven Isserlis CBE, and the legendary Cuban pioneer of Afro-Cuban jazz Cándido Camero, to name a few.
Luis was the recipient of the Draper Grand Prize and the People's Choice Award at the Portrait Society of America's 24th International Portrait Competition celebrated in Atlanta, Georgia, in April 2022. In 2019, he was selected as a finalist at The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition by the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. His work is in many private and public collections, including the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery; The Museu Europeu d'Art Modern in Barcelona, Spain; The Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C.; The Players of New York, New York City; and The Steinway Hall, New York City. In 2020, Luis received the title of Living Master by the Art Renewal Center.
