2025 Realism on the Hudson is a juried, members only, small works show.

The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) is pleased to announce the Realism on the Hudson show at the Howland Cultural Center representing the finest in American realism.

The exhibition and virtual show are open to all AAPL Members in good standing; 2-dimensional work is only to be hung on the walls. This venue is not appropriate for sculpture.

About the Howland Cultural Center

The non-profit Howland Cultural Center, the 'Jewel of Beacon’, fosters arts and culture since 1979. They own, preserve, and operate the historic 1872 Richard Morris Hunt building designed as the Howland Circulating Library. The Howland Cultural Center has earned its reputation for its exceptional acoustics in the Northcutt Hall gallery. The galley is open free to the public during weekends and by appointment during the week.

Along with the AAPL show, Howland will host musical ensembles on the weekends, drawing hundreds of people to the show. On average there are 150 visitors every weekend day. Historically art sales at Howland have fallen in the mid-low price range.

Terms and Conditions

  • AAPL Members only.
  • No limit to the number of entries artists may submit; only one will be accepted.
  • Only Representational works or Realism will be considered.
  • Acceptable media includes, but is not limited to: oil, acrylic, water media, colored pencil, scratchboard, pastel, drawings, and graphics (non-mechanical fine art prints). Choose the dominant media when entering mixed media, and list all media used in the description. Direct questions about non-traditional media to [email protected].
  • Artwork must be original and not previously exhibited online or in-person with the American Artists Professional League.
  • Giclées, photographs, digital prints, painting on photos, AI or digitally derived works are not eligible.
  • Artwork must be for sale.
  • Framed dimensions: Maximum of 20 inches high X 20 inches wide.
  • Gallery wrapped with finished edges are permitted.
  • Selected work will be showcased on AAPLinc.org, in print ads, in the AAPL newsletter, and on AAPL social media.
  • Your entry confirms that the work entered is your own and that copyrighted or public domain images by others have not been incorporated into your work.
  • By entering, you agree that AAPL may reproduce your work for promotional purposes.

Entry Fees

  • AAPL members: $50.00 for two entries, $20.00 for each additional entry.
  • No refunds for rejected works.
Mistaken entries will be donated to the American Artists Fund, the charitable arm of AAPL; no refunds will be given. Please read the prospectus carefully.

Entry Process and Specifications

  • All entries are to be submitted through ShowSubmit.com This link will start the entry process for submission. ShowSubmit provides a comprehensive ‘Help Menu.'
  • AAPL provides help with any application issues by contacting Alex at [email protected].
  • Submit digital files in the universal jpeg format (see Image and Filename Specifications below for more information).
  • No frame, mat, or background may be visible.
  • Image must be displayed right side up.
  • No submissions will be accepted after February 5th, 2025.

Jury Process

  • Selection: Each entry is reviewed and scored by a panel of the Board of Directors of AAPL. Guest Jurors of Selection: Brian McClear, Exhibition Co-Chair; Theresa Kraft, President of the Howland Cultural Center Board.
  • Submissions are scored on the quality and individual mastery of each medium as well as the composition and design of the work.
  • Jurors score the image and do not see any information about the artist.
  • Images not displayed right side up or without proper cropping will not be juried.
  • Jurors on the panel make selections based on the digital image(s). Make certain the image(s) submitted is a true representation of the work. Work misrepresented by the submitted image(s) will not be shown.

1st place $400, 2nd place $200, 3rd place $100, and merchandise awards.

Opening Reception & Awards

Sales

  • All works must be for sale.
  • Accepted works will be posted on AAPLinc.org to promote sales.
  • Sold artwork will be allowed to be removed from the show floor, or shipped at the buyer’s request and expense. Airfloat boxes will be returned to the artist unless otherwise arranged.
  • A 30% commission will be realized on all sold work.

Notification of Accepted Works

  • Announced no later than February 14th, 2025.
  • Names of ‘Accepted Artists’ to be listed on the AAPL website: AAPLinc.org.

Delivery of Accepted Works

  • All accepted work needs to be professionally presented and ready for hanging; framed or gallery-wrapped canvas, with attached wires. No sawtooth hangers.
  • Delivery by FedEx or UPS accepted at the Howland Cultural Center February 24 through the 27th.
  • In-person delivery accepted February 28th 10am - 1pm
  • Work must be packed in an AirFloat StrongBox, or similar box, and must include return shipping labels. Boxes packed with styrofoam or peanuts will not be unpacked. AAPL has arranged for a discount with AirFloat; code AAPL2023.
  • Upon acceptance, indicate a willingness to sell the box to the buyer of your work (reimbursement would follow) or if the box should be shipped back empty.
  • Shipped work must include a FedEx or UPS pre-paid return label.

Artwork Pick up & Ship

Work will be shipped, or may be picked up, on Monday April 14, 2025.

Artist Submission Agreement

Your online entry will constitute that you agree and acknowledge the terms and conditions set forth in this Prospectus.

Notifications will be emailed and posted in your ShowSubmit account by the end of the day on February 14, 2025.

You may view the notification in your ShowSubmit account by logging in and tapping the Notifications at the top right of the screen, or in your Entry History (Accepted works will be notated by a green check.)

If you do not receive your email, login and view the notification in your account. We cannot respond to inquiries regarding the status of notifications.

Note: Entries made prior to 2023 may not display the View Notification link.

Image and Filename Specifications

  • Submit your original JPEG image files.
  • Crop out all parts of the photo that are not the actual work; do not show mat, frame, etc, only the work itself.
  • Image must be displayed right side up.
  • You do not need to resize your image files.
  • You do not need to rename your image files.

Additional Entry Information

  • You will pay for your entry by credit or debit card using our secure checkout system.
  • After your entry is submitted and paid for, you may log back in to review your entry, edit artist and image information, and add or substitute images up until the entry deadline (February 5, 2025.)
  • Entry fees are not refundable and must be submitted and paid by the entry deadline.
  • Entries cannot be accepted or changed after the deadline. Incomplete entries will be disqualified.
