The National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) and the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) strive to preserve and promote a better understanding and appreciation of American maritime history and marine art. We welcome you to our inaugural 2025 Art of the Sea, an online exhibition and sale promoting original maritime art.

Awards

  • 1st Place — $2,000
  • 2nd Place — $1,000
  • 3rd Place — $500
  • 3 Merit Awards — $200

Entry Fees

  • $35 for the first work
  • $10 for each additional work

Eligibility

  • Artists must be a member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA.)
  • A non-member may join ASMA and then apply for the exhibition.

Exhibition Requirements

  • Work must be for sale and available to ship between June 1st and July 1st, 2025.
  • Subject matter: artwork inspired by water: vessels, waterways, coastal scenes, and marine life in all its forms.
  • Accepted Media: all painting mediums, drawings, pastel, sculpture and scrimshaw.
  • Digital artwork will not be accepted.
  • Members of ASMA must be current on dues prior to show entry.

Jury

Two officers of the National Maritime Historical Society and two officers of The American Society of Marine Artists will jury the show. Submissions will be judged on creativity, originality, technique/skill, presentation, and overall quality and cohesiveness within the show.

Sales

  • Work must be for sale and be available to ship between June 1st and July 1st.
  • Artists will receive 75% of the sale; 25% of the sale will benefit the National Maritime Historical Society and is a tax-deductible contribution for the buyer.

Shipping

The artist is responsible for shipping sold artwork to the buyer.

Photo Release Statement

Artists agree to allow the American Society of Marine Artists to use your entry image(s) without compensation by ASMA and its representatives. Images or likenesses may be used in publications, websites or social media for any lawful purpose or advertising.

Terms

Artists can edit their own entries during the entirety of the submission period through ShowSubmit.

After the submission deadline, changes to submission entry will not be accepted.

Submissions not adhering to the above guidelines may be omitted from the exhibition.

Additional Notification Information

Notifications will be emailed and posted in your ShowSubmit account by the end of the day on May 15, 2025.

You may view the notification in your ShowSubmit account by logging in and tapping the Notifications at the top right of the screen, or in your Entry History (Accepted works will be notated by a green check.)

If you do not receive your email, login and view the notification in your account. We cannot respond to inquiries regarding the status of notifications.

Note: Entries made prior to 2023 may not display the View Notification link.

Image and Filename Specifications

  • File Format: Submit original, high-quality JPEG image files. Other formats (e.g., PNG, TIFF) are not accepted.
  • Crop Your Image: Ensure only the artwork itself is visible in the image. Do not show any visible matting, frames, or background distractions.
  • Orientation: Make sure your image is oriented correctly (right side up) so that the artwork appears in its intended viewing direction.
  • Image Size: You do not need to resize your image files before uploading. The system will automatically resize them. Smaller images cannot be enlarged to meet the requirements, so ensure your images are high resolution before uploading.
  • File Names: You do not need to rename your files before uploading them. The system will handle any file naming requirements.
  • File Size: There is a 30mb maximum file size limit. Larger image files will take longer to upload and process.

Additional Entry Information

  • You will pay for your entry by credit or debit card using our secure checkout system.
  • After your entry is submitted and paid for, you may log back in to review your entry, edit artist and image information, and add or substitute images up until the entry deadline (April 15, 2025.)
  • Entry fees are not refundable and must be submitted and paid by the entry deadline.
  • Entries cannot be accepted or changed after the deadline. Incomplete entries will be disqualified.
