About Open Space

Since 2001, Open Space: Art About the Land, an annual art competition and exhibition, has encouraged Indiana artists to derive creative inspiration from the land and recognized new artistic creations that celebrate the notion of “open space” as it relates to the land.

Open Space
will be exhibited at both Minnetrista Museum & Gardens and the Anderson Museum of Art (AMOA). Developed by the two museums in partnership with Red-tail Land Conservancy, a portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Red-tail’s work to preserve and restore vital wildlife habitats and natural beauty.

Juror

Mark Ruschman is Senior Curator of Art and Culture, Emeritus at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) in Indianapolis, Indiana, retiring from the position in July 2023. He was responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of the ISMHS fine art collection and curated numerous exhibitions at both the museum and various historic sites. Exhibitions include 200 Years of Indiana Art: A Cultural Legacy, Inspired by the Dunes: The Paintings of Frank V. Dudley, and most recently, the Hoosier Salon 100th Anniversary Exhibition. Prior to joining ISMHS in 2012, Mark owned and directed Ruschman Gallery in Indianapolis for 25 years.

Awards & Reception

Awards totaling $1,600, sponsored by 1816 Wealth Management Partners of Raymond James, will be given at the juror’s discretion. Prizes and awards include: First Place ($500), Second Place ($350), Third Place ($250), Photography Merit Award ($100), Three-Dimensional Artwork Merit Award ($100), Jim Faulkner Landscape Merit Award ($100), and the Anderson Prize for Art ($100), for the best exhibited piece representing any Red-tail Land Conservancy nature preserve (please identify if your artwork represents any Red-tail preserve).
