Through A Child’s Eyes — Delve into the world of innocence, wonder, and imagination as you interpret this theme through your artistic vision. In a world often clouded by the complexities of adulthood, we want to rediscover the simplicity and pure perspective that children possess. How do they perceive the world around them? What wonders do they see in the ordinary? But our youth can also be a challenging time. As a young person ages, what future do they see for themselves? What are their fears, hopes and dreams?

Pastel Society Alaska’s mission each year is to make the world a better place using our artistic skills. This year our focus is My House, an organization in Wasilla, Alaska that works to prevent homelessness in teens, and Kids Kupboard, working to stop hunger among youth in the Southcentral area of Alaska. Our work on behalf of these two organizations prompted the theme of Through A Child’s Eyes, and can inform your creative inspiration as well.

If there is interest in purchasing an artwork, PSAK will put the buyer in direct contact with the artist. The artist and buyer will then work out the details of the purchase and delivery.

Juror of Selection

Gina Murrow, the 27-Minute Artist, will be the juror. (27minuteartist.com) Gina has taught art workshops for the last 10 years, most often in pastels. She’s the founder and inventor of Paint A Scarf, a popular silk scarf painting tourist destination in the Anchorage, Alaska area. When the Pandemic stopped people from gathering, Gina pivoted her art teaching to encompass all mediums. She started @27MinuteArtist in January of 2024, opening a YouTube channel with art instruction online in a variety of mediums and subjects. Pastel paintings are her first love.

Judge of Awards

Barbara Jaenicke is the award’s judge. Barbara’s early career was spent in advertising as an art director, and in 2002, she was able to turn her focus to a fine art career, pursuing it full steam ahead. Working in oil and pastel, Barbara strives to capture light-filled landscapes in a painterly, impressionist style. She holds signature memberships in Oil Painters of America (OPA) and American Impressionist Society (AIS), and has earned the distinctions of Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and Eminent Pastelist in the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).

Her award highlights include Top 25 Finalist in the annual Plein Air Salon 2023, 2nd Place overall in the 2022 Pastel Journal's Pastel 100 Competition, and many more (See barbarajaenicke.com/about) She has been featured in numerous art publications including Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Artists Magazine, and Southwest Art, and has served as a contributing writer for some of these publications.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Barbara also lived in Atlanta, Georgia for many years until she yearned for snow and mountains for her landscape subject matter, which prompted her family’s move to Bend, Oregon in 2015.
