About

The Nature of Pastels will utilize the unique features of pastel painting to explore the natural world. Paintings may feature the Maine coast (seascapes or landscapes), the flora and fauna living there, and human interaction with the natural world (e.g. working waterfront).

Part of the entry fee and proceeds from sales in the exhibition will be used by FOMCI to support the successful seabird restoration project that focuses on six key nesting islands on the Maine Coast. In partnership with other groups, this restoration project has re-established puffin and razorbill nesting colonies and improved the population numbers of terns and other seabirds. Some species (e.g. puffins) were almost eradicated from the Maine coast by 1900. Art sales and other income generated by the exhibition will help support several young biologists who will live for three summer months on the nesting islands. These seabird interns protect the birds from predators, remove invasive species and work with scientists to conduct vital research on seabirds.
