Juror of Selection and Awards
Bill Finewood is originally from Newark, NY where he lived the majority of his life. He now lives in Ontario, NY and still a proud 315er!
Bill loves painting landscapes, birds/animals and occasional architectural subjects as well as commissioned work of various themes. His commissioned work last year was very memorable. He completed a visual memory of a young child during her early years in war torn 1940s Holland, a scene of the St Lawrence River where a couple were engaged and another was the recollection of a man seeing his future home for the first time 44 years ago. “To me, these works have been most rewarding in the sense that I was able to picture memories of events that had profoundly influenced the lives of these people. I was able to create objects they can look at every day, reminding them of what is really important to them. For me, these pictures are gratifying accomplishments in my life as an artist.”
Bill always approaches his work in the way of an illustrator. It’s very important for him to do research on the subject to get all the details correct. His work is carefully planned out and rendered in a very realistic manner. As an illustrator he worked three dimensionally, not a usual method of work. He also taught his dimensional illustration methods for many years at RIT. “Shortly before I retired from RIT I decided that working in this medium was not going to be right for me as I moved forward as an artist. I didn’t want to have lots of “stuff”. Now I can put all my equipment and oil paints into a little box and backpack and go outside to paint a few hours a day. Then when I return, sometimes I have a little painting I’m proud of. This is a great way to spend a day.”
Bill earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University and worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. He taught at Finger Lakes Community College and most recently as a full time Associate Professor of illustration at RIT for over 20 years. He is a member of Wayne Arts, Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters and a member of Pittsford Fine Art. Over the years he has presented his work along with his working methods to numerous groups in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area. Bill’s work has been commissioned by clients including: Xerox, Mobil, DuPont, Holt Rinehart and Winston, Citibank, Federal Reserve Bank, Dunn and Bradstreet, Pfizer, Nalge, Time, Flyfisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, Habitat for Humanity and Fisher-Price Toys. His work has been exhibited in shows including the Society of Illustrators, Dimensional and Digital Illustrators Awards Show, American Illustration as well as group and one man exhibitions.
