Awards

Artwork accepted for the Annual Exhibition will be eligible for the Society of Animal Artists Award of Excellence. These coveted bronze medals are awarded annually to those works that best reflect the highest standards of artistic excellence in animal art. A jury of prominent judges will choose the recipients at the Annual Exhibition. Cash and purchase awards will also be awarded.

Entry Fees

SAA Members Only: $35 for the first entry and $10 for an optional second entry.

Exhibition Requirements

  • Open to all SAA members whose dues are current.

If in doubt, confirm with the office, [email protected], that you are in good standing with your dues before submitting. After the deadline, it is too late to pay dues to stay eligible for the show.
  • Artists may submit up to two entries.
  • Work exhibited in a previous SAA Annual Exhibition or special show may not be entered.

Artwork Requirements

  • All work must be original and 2D work properly mounted and framed.
  • Size and weight limits are 2D: 60 inches framed, 3D: 150 lbs.
CONSIDER the cost to ship larger and heavier works BEFORE you submit to the jury!
  • All work MUST have been completed in the last five (5) years. (2021-2025)
  • Unfinished works are Not acceptable to the jury! This includes sculpture in clay. What you submit to the jury is the image to be used inside the catalog and promotions. If you want your signature to appear on your work in the catalog, then include it in your submission. Wes will be removing signatures from images before they are seen by the jury.
  • While not required, we recommend a minimum frame size of 7x7 inches to facilitate the display of your work. Smaller pieces may be placed inside display cases.
  • We recommend not shipping under glass. You do so at great risk of damage.
The Society reserves the right not to display work that does not match the quality of the digital images entered.

Shipping Policies

The lack of return shipping labels and shipments needing special attention was a major problem after the 64th. Wes worked for over a month to sort out 22 “issues.” We have instituted changes to prevent this from happening again. Please consider these changes (below) BEFORE you submit to the jury!
  • All artists Must enclose a return label, which can be Easily found inside the crate. Exceptions would be internationals unable to process a label that early and anyone shipping freight. Artists Must email the SAA office a copy of their return label. (FedEx or UPS) International artists selected for the exhibition Must include copies of all their shipping documents. (i.e., Commercial Invoice, Works of Art for Duty-Free Entry, …whatever applies to your shipment)
  • If you Do not enclose a return label, your work will not be displayed. We also can’t guarantee that work left in crates will be stored in a climate-controlled area due to the museum's lack of space.
  • Works arriving After the shipping window due to the artist’s error may be rejected. Artists are also subject to being excluded from SAA shows for two years.
  • All shipping costs (inbound and outbound) are the responsibility of the artist. Direct-billed return labels Must be placed where they can be easily found inside your crate. Any customs charges are the responsibility of the artist.
  • Works that are sold to be shipped will require an updated shipping label from the artist. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF SHIPPING TO A BUYER! Factor this cost when pricing your work for the exhibition. Return labels will be discarded for sold works when buyers pick up the work in person.

Submission Policies

  • Submission to any SAA show is a commitment to participate. Artists withdrawing their work will be subject to a 2-year ban from entering any SAA exhibition.
  • For Master Signature Members – You are exempt from the jury and thus have a free pass for submitting work within the category you received your Awards of Excellence. Otherwise, you are welcome to submit to our jury a work outside of your recognized category accepted, but you MUST pay the jury fee.

Sales

There will be a 30% commission on sales. Work does not have to be for sale, but it is recommended. Once the acceptance notifications are sent, works are committed to the opening venue. Once notified of acceptance, any sales “on your own” still owe a commission to the venue.

Catalog

Accepted works will be illustrated in a color, print-on-demand catalog. There will be no production fee for the artists.
